Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr. Award in American History and Public Commentary

On the occasion of Professor Schlesinger’s 80th birthday, friends established a $500,000 endowment to be administered by FERI to honor individuals who have made significant contributions in the fields of American history, public policy and participation in public affairs. The judges for the Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr. Award in American History and Public Commentary are the eminent historian John Morton Blum, prize-winning Roosevelt biographer

Doris Kearns Goodwin, and TV journalist Walter Cronkite. The award is $25,000. The recipient is asked when possible to give a public lecture on observations regarding contemporary challenges to democracy and freedom. The first award was given to Professor Schlesinger himself in 1998 and John Kenneth Galbraith received the prize in l999.
